Big Sky Brewing Company Signs Water Restoration Agreement

Portland, Ore and Missoula, Mont. – July 8, 2010 – Big Sky Brewing, Montana’s largest brewer, announced today that it has signed a three-year contract for Water Restoration Certificates – an innovative water stewardship program launched by the Bonneville Environmental Foundation (BEF) last year. The purchase will result in restoring flow in Prickly Pear Creek – a tributary of the Missouri River located near Helena, Montana. BEF’s Water Restoration Certificate (WRC) program is the first national-level, market-based solution that enables businesses to take responsibility for water consumption by helping restore water flow to critically de-watered creeks and rivers.

“Not only do we depend on Montana’s water resources to produce our world-class beers, but beer drinking and fly-fishing are two deeply rooted Montana pastimes and contributors to the State economy, “ said Chris Corbin, Sales Representative of Big Sky Brewing Company. “We are impressed with BEF’s WRC program because it is a private-sector solution with easily quantifiable results.”

Big Sky Brewing Company’s purchase will result in more than 10 million gallons of water restored to the Prickly Pear Creek during the next three years. BEF is working closely with the Clark Fork Coalition, the organization that facilitates negotiations with local water rights holders and ensures compliance.

Big Sky Dominates Down Under

Big Sky Brewing Company sent three beers to the Australian International Beer Awards this year and came away with the trophy for "Best New Exhibitor"!  The AIBA is a very prestigious beer festival with nearly 1,200 beers entered by 243 breweries from 34 countries.  For Big Sky, our Ivan the Terrible Imperial Stout and Bobo's Robust Porter took home gold medals while Big Sky IPA took home the silver.  Whether or not this opens the door for us to begin selling our beer (and taking sales trips!) to Australia remains to be seen, but we are very pleased with the reception our beers received in Oz.
